Biking in Raystone

Deep in the lake trails of Pittsburgh, mountain biking groups are following challenging paths in the regions hilly terrain. Mountain biking through the trails in this region is a high energy activity and one that is sure to get your heart racing and your lungs full of healthy fresh air.

There are four types of mountain biking - cross country, downhill, free-ride and trials or street racing. The different styles all have separate followings and cultures behind them. Trail biking is one of the most earliest forms of this sport.

To be a good mountain biker you need endurance, stamina and a degree of self reliance. Most riders have a strong relationship with their bikes, often repairing the bikes themselves and tending to the parts.

The bikes themselves are different to road bikes and have smaller reinforced frames, wider higher profile tyres and a wide range of gears to help the rider climb steep slopes. Some bikes are even fitted with disc brakes similar to cars to add some extra braking power in a time of need.

At the Rayston Lake Trails, a couple of riders have put together a video of their ride using a helmet mounted camera. You can see the beautiful trail in this video:

Many riders choose to capture their runs on helmet mounted cameras like the guys up at the Rayston Lake Trails. This ensures that riders have a good memory of the path and can relive the experience any time they like.
Using a normal camera to do this wouldn’t be that wise as they aren’t rugged enough to handle the vibrations that would be produced under these conditions. You can find these kinds of camera here and here.

Dirt Biking & Motocross Competitions

Dirt biking or Motocross is an exhilarating sport that came from Britain, were it was originally called Scrambling. These scrambling events took place in Surrey in 1924. The bikes were rapidly improved to deal with the brutal forces of the race and todays bikes are even more sophisticated.

There are three major competitions that take place in the world of Motocross.

The first is the AMA Motocross Championship. This starts in May and ends in September. The race involves twelve rounds of racing at twelve tracks in the US. With two classes - 125cc and 250cc, the race is also referred to as the “outdoor series”.

The Grand Prix which is also referred to as the Motocross World Championship is held predominantly in Europe with a few rounds in Chile, South America, South Africa and Japan. The race lasts for thirty five minutes and two laps and has about sixteen rounds.
Annually, the Motocross of Nations takes place at the end of the year after the National and World Championship series end. It takes place in a different country ever year with past hosts being the US, Belgium and the UK.

In a lot of these events, there is often a camera shot of the view from the driver’s cockpit. This is called a helmet mounted camera. You can get a real feel for the speed that these vehicles go at and the forces that the driver must experience.

The company that makes those cameras is hosting a competition on their site where you can send in your clips of dirt biking or motocross rides. You can find out more about getting hold of one at: www.vholdrcontourhd.com or www.viopov1-5camera.com

Fire and Ice Jumps with ContourHD

For VholdR.com member Jesse.Robson jumping through rings of fire is pretty standard stuff. We’re just glad he had his ContourHD wearable camcorder on at the time, because watching through his eyes was pretty cool. It’s called Whistler Fire and Ice Edit check it out.

I just remembered we had that old Fire and Ice video shot with a VholdR. I watched it again and was amazed at how far we’ve come. You can really see how much better the ContourHD handles low-light situations.
